The Honolulu Advertiser described Schweitzer's book Kohala ‘Aina, A History of North Kohala (Mutual Publishing, November 2003) as "gorgeous and well-written."  In April 2004, it won Best-in-Show out of seventeen categories in the annual statewide Keep it Hawai‘i awards.

The afterword for Kohala 'Aina tells about the book, true.  Yet read between the lines and discover why the author chose writing as her career. It's all about understanding, healing, dialogue...

A Future Embracing the Past
(...) A variety of endeavors to help Kohala’s people understand their past and chart their future offered not more than a weak bridge. Could Kohala perpetuate the legacy of a King?
Newcomers came with new ideas. (...)Misunderstandings rose as well as anger and fear. The children of old-timers lost touch with their Kohala roots.

A dialogue between old and new is slowly emerging, and with it the challenge to balance the past, present, and future, to instill courage, and visions that include everyone. This book is part of the dialogue. It is our hope that the preservation of our community’s past—through literature and storytelling—can provide a vital contribution to a new prosperity, shared by all.

More about Sophia V. Schweitzer

After obtaining a Masters in French Language and Literature in the Netherlands, where she was  born and raised, Schweitzer studied sustainable living at the Findhorn Foundation in Northern Scotland for eight years. A Big Island resident since 1988, Schweitzer has had the privilege of studying with chef Peter Merriman, the pioneering "father" of Hawaii Regional Cuisine, and other island leaders. She writes for numerous national consumer and trade publications including Spirit of Aloha, Spa, Islands, AAA, Natural Medicine, Coastal Living, and Hearst and Meredith Publishing imprints.

The Hawai‘i Chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators honored Schweitzer with an Ilima Award for health reporting.
